Sapcote Yard

Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham

Sapcote Yard is a residential development located on Camden Street, north of Birmingham City Centre within the city’s historic Jewellery Quarter. The site had operated as builders’ yard since the early 20th Century however in recent years it has been unoccupied and in need of redevelopment.

Working with the client, D5 have developed a proposal for 11 townhouses and 2 apartments comprised of both new build and refurbishment elements. At the street frontage the existing Camden Street block is to be retained and refurbished, with an additional roof top extension also proposed. To the rear of the site, two new build blocks of townhouses are to be created.

When developing the design for the project D5 have carefully considered the sites location within the Jewellery Quarter and its relationship to a number of nearby listed buildings. Where possible the designs have made reference to existing structures on the site, in particular the historic Barns building at the rear that is being safeguarded for future development.

With this in mind a limited palette of brick, slate and timber is proposed, and design features such as exposed steel lintels and bull nose bricks have been utilised in order to create a proposals that is both contemporary and contextual.
