Norwood Road

The original building, constructed from London Stock brick with red brick detailing and a white terracotta façade, had two storeys providing ground floor sales area, a first floor stock room and rear service yard. The front section of the first floor had a double height space, giving the building a three storey appearance externally, but was internally unused and empty. Since Woolworths ceased trading from the site, it has been used by Sainsbury’s as a convenience store, with late opening and Sunday trading, limiting the space it could occupy. Therefore, the first floor had become completely unused.

An enabling works package was first completed, which split the ground floor accommodation from the first floor, enabling them to be accessed independently. The conversion and extension project then followed.

The building was increased in size by adding a brick faced extension to rear portion of the building to complete the third storey with matching details. A fourth storey was also added across the top of the building in contrasting pre-patinated copper shingles. Window openings where increased down the side road elevation and their size repeated in the new brick extension providing winter garden accommodation to the dwellings within.

On the private side of the building a communal resident’s roof garden has been formed over the second story, over looked by private terraces and balcony’s from the new dwellings.

New accommodation provided includes a mix of 1 and 2 bedroom apartments including 4 duplex’s with 2 benefiting from dramatic double height spaces that incorporate the existing double height windows in the Listed façade. All but one unit has private external space or winter gardens and all but 2 have dual aspect accommodation.
