Bangladeshi Islamic Centre

Smethwick, West Midlands

Selected through an invited design competition, D5 Architects have developed the design of a new Bangladeshi Islamic Centre, to replace existing facilities with a 3 storey purpose built Community Centre on the site of an existing centre.

The building in Smethwick, West Midlands, has been designed to provide a welcoming, easily accessible and contemporary response to the community’s religious, cultural, community and leisure needs. The building has been designed in two halves, with one half wrapped in a golden screen employing a traditional Islamic pattern accommoding the buildings religious activities. The second, leisure, half of the building contrasts with the golden screen by employing dark brick, curved corners and circular windows. The building accommodates prayer rooms, ablutions areas, teaching rooms, meeting rooms, offices, IT suites, health clinic, kitchen, nursery and gym.

The project has received Full Planning Approval.
