Bridge Street West

Newtown, Birmingham

Design of a new build Purpose Built Student Accommodation (PDSA) just north of Birmingham city centre.

D5 were appointed for the design of new purpose build student residential accommodation in the Newtown area of Birmingham. Accommodation was arranged across  6 storeys with a feature 2 storey entrance reception area.  To maximise development on the tight urban site, splayed bay windows were incorporated into the design to allow daylight into student bedspaces whilst permitting front facing views of the street and respecting privacy of the adjacent development.

Accommodation was provided in fully self contained micro studios with shared lounges spread across the development. Each bedroom provided distinct living/ sleeping/ ancillary accommodation with a fully self contained compact kitchen. The building provided passive overlooking of the adjacent public open space to improve safety and activate the previously vacant boundary.

The building was proposed to be clad in high pressure laminated large format timber panels with a brickwork plinth offering a robust material where the building touched the ground and high visual impact at high level.

STATUS: Full planning permission was granted in 2020.
