BAL Next Generation Security
Birmingham Airport, Birmingham
The project involved the creation of a new Passenger Search Area (PSA) to accommodate new advanced security screening equipment and associated terminal modifications. These Next Generation Security Checkpoint (NGSC) works were progressed to meet the UK Department for Transport (DfT) directive for new passenger and baggage security screening requirements to be in place by Mid 2024.
The NGSC works involved creation of an entirely new PSA in the heart of the original 1980’s terminal building. Extensive internal reorganisation works were required including an extension to the terminal landside frontage to accommodate new lifts and stairs to the new PSA. The project was planned to be completed in two phases, both of which have received Full Planning Permission. The alterations will significantly improve passenger circulation with a key part of the client’s brief to create a ‘forgettable’ frictionless passenger experience as they make their way to the departure lounges following arrival at the airport.
New high-performance insulated materials were used to replace the existing polycarbonate roof above the central landside terminal area. In addition to the architectural changes, a large portion of the project work involved significant building services upgrades. The roof replacement and services upgrades were designed to reduce energy usage and the associated carbon emissions, helping the airport on its journey towards net zero carbon by 2033, whilst improving the quality of the passenger experience.
